Confidence Isn't Loud. It's a Skill You Build.

Confidence doesn't mean being the loudest person in the room or having it all figured out. Most of the time, it just means choosing to try anyway. Raising your hand when your voice shakes. Walking into the room when your brain is begging you to sit this one out. Giving yourself permission to be seen, even when it feels uncomfortable.
If you've ever held yourself back because of fear, doubt, or comparison, you're not alone. And you don't have to stay stuck there.
As a boudoir and branding photographer in Westminster, CO, I see this shift happen in real time. Clients walk into the studio saying they're "not confident enough to wear this" or "just not photogenic." Then something clicks. By the end of the session, they're standing differently, glowing with a confidence they didn't know they had.
Confidence isn't a rare gift handed to a lucky few. It's a skill. A muscle. Something you build through small, repeated, intentional steps. This is your guide to building it, so you can show up fully, not just in front of the camera but everywhere else too.
Confidence Is Built, Not Bestowed
Nobody wakes up magically confident. It's not something you're born with or without. It's built the same way strength is built, through repetition.
Every small brave step counts as evidence. Showing up for a photoshoot. Hitting "post" on that video. Looking in the mirror and saying, "I'm proud of you." Each one stacks proof that you can do hard things, that you are enough.
Action builds belief. Belief creates confidence. Confidence fuels more action.
That's the cycle, and it works every time you let it.
The Real Glow-Up Happens on the Inside
A new outfit, a bold lipstick, a fresh haircut, sure, that stuff feels good and I'm 100% here for it. But the real glow-up is an inside job.
It's when you stop apologizing for taking up space. It's when you stop waiting for "perfect" before you begin. It's when you let the real, unfiltered version of you show up without shrinking.
That inner glow is exactly what I'm looking for behind the camera. The photos that stop people in their tracks are rarely the perfectly posed ones. They're the ones where the client stopped performing and just let herself be there.
Power Poses: How Body Language Rewires Confidence
Your body isn't just along for the ride, it's a tool. Research on embodied cognition shows that the way you physically hold yourself shapes how confident you feel mentally. You can hack your own nervous system by choosing posture that signals strength before you actually feel it.
Try these before your next big moment:
- The Power Stance. Stand tall, feet apart, hands on hips, shoulders back, chin lifted. Two minutes here and you walk into the room like you own it.
- The CEO Lean. Sit with intention: lean forward slightly, knees wide, hands relaxed, eyes steady. This is the posture of someone who isn't shrinking to be more palatable. She's taking up exactly the space she deserves.
- The Victory Pose. Arms overhead in a big "V," like you just crossed a finish line. Do it in your bathroom mirror, your car, the studio bathroom before your shoot, wherever. It doesn't just boost your mood, it's actually been linked to lower cortisol.
Practice these in private before a camera or a high-stakes moment. Your nervous system responds faster than you'd think.
Build a Confidence Playlist That Actually Works
Music bypasses doubt and drops you straight into your body. That's why I tell every client to build a hype playlist before a shoot, a big meeting, or just a hard Monday.
A few go-tos, mine and my clients':
- "Rise Up" — Andra Day
- "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" — Kelly Clarkson
- Anything Queen Herby, but "My SZN" and "Check" are high-vibe standouts
- "Shake It Off" / "The Man" — Taylor Swift
- "Run the World (Girls)" — Beyoncé
- "Good as Hell" — Lizzo
Press play, feel what you need to feel, and let your energy shift before you ever walk in the door.
"Ask-ffirmations": A Smarter Way to Rewire Doubt
Traditional affirmations can feel like lying to yourself, saying "I am confident" when you don't buy it yet. That's where ask-ffirmations come in. Instead of a flat statement, you ask your brain a question. Questions send your brain looking for evidence, which builds curiosity instead of resistance.
Try these next time doubt creeps in:
- Why am I so uniquely qualified for this?
- What if this could actually be easy?
- Why am I the right person to say this?
- What if it turns out better than I can imagine?
- Why do I look so good in this outfit?
Write them on sticky notes, save them in your phone, whisper them in the mirror. Curiosity builds confidence faster than force ever will.
Practice Showing Up Imperfectly
Confidence doesn't show up because you finally feel ready. It shows up because you moved before you felt ready.
- On camera: Record ten practice videos and never post a single one. Get used to seeing yourself.
- In conversation: Speak up in a meeting, with your family, with your friends, even if your voice shakes. The more reps, the more natural it feels.
- In life: Publish the post. Share the photo. Launch the idea. Apply anyway. Wear the outfit. Done beats perfect, every time.
Every rep builds the confidence muscle.
Daily Confidence Builders
You don't need hours of mindset work. Small, consistent habits compound faster than any big overhaul.
- Mirror Moments. Each morning, look yourself in the eye and say one kind thing out loud. "I love how resilient you are." "I'm proud of you for showing up today." Or just, "damn, those arms are goals."
- Micro Bravery. Do one slightly uncomfortable thing daily: start the conversation, wear the bold lipstick, pitch yourself for the opportunity.
- Confidence Journal. Keep a running list of wins, big and small. Over time, it becomes a library of proof that you're capable, proof you can go back to whenever doubt creeps in.
Confidence isn't a destination you arrive at once. It's a muscle you keep training.
Permission to Be Seen
You don't need to wait for it, earn it, or fix yourself first.
Permission to be seen, even unpolished. Permission to take up space, even uncertain. Permission to chase joy, even if someone else doesn't get it.
You're worthy of being seen right now, exactly as you are, not as you think you're supposed to be.
And if you need a safe space to practice that, that's what a boudoir or branding session at Sabrina Harrison Photography is built for. My job isn't just to take the photos. It's to help you remember your own power and capture the confidence that was in you the whole time.
Final Word
Your glow-up doesn't start at some future milestone, and it doesn't wait for you to "feel ready." It starts the second you decide to stop hiding.
Every act of courage, pressing record, walking into the studio, choosing to believe in yourself one more time, adds to the transformation.
Confidence isn't about perfection. It's about presence. Your voice, your story, your energy, all of it belongs here.
Glow up. Show up. The world's waiting.
